The Middlebury Student Government Association is the primary channel through which students participate in college policy making and represent the Middlebury student body. In the interest of transparency and increased participation, members of the Middlebury community may use this site to raise any issues that they wish the SGA to address. Election format.

While some marked improvements were made last spring in the way that SGA elections are run, there is still considerable room for improvement.

First, as stands there is no opportunity for voters to nominate alternate candidates after the initial candidates have been announced. This means nobody can be added to the ballot or join the races even through a write-in after the candidates are announced to the student body. This format does not promote student involvement in the SGA or candidates that represent their constituents. It is essential that the election format be modified to allow write-in candidates.

Secondly, as we were able to accomplish in the presidential elections at the end of the year, we should also release the vote counts of all the senatorial races. Transparency is the key to any government, and any excuse otherwise is juvenile. Transparency also lends a bit of legitimacy to a goverment.

Finally, while not especially pertinent to this current election, I would advocate a re-examination of the current system of representation in the SGA, perhaps if students had some contact and interaction with their representatives they would actually feel like the SGA was working for the students.

    Quick question:

Where can I find the new york Times? Are the papers going to be in the dining halls?

    Sincerely,

I think that the SGA should work to bring newpapers back to dining halls, and should come up with the best ways to encourage students to dispose of the newspapers responsibally. Maybe little pockets or compartments that could be attached to the dining hall tables?

With respect to the College Readership Program, funds have been allocated and newspapers should be available in the dining halls within the next few weeks.

As always, students will be encouraged to recycle the newspapers by returning them to the racks when they are done.
